No rest for the wicked...

I've just gotten back from my big Newcastle to Gold Coast ride and already have the next trip planned.
This week one of my co-workers said that he's still keen on doing a ride to Sydney as we had discussed earlier in the year and I told him that I have been planning to do my "maiden imperial century" from Newcastle to Sydney.
maiden = first, imperial = miles (160kms), century = 100
So the aim would be to ride more than 160kms in a day and from where I live now in Mayfield, Newcastle to where I used to live in Manly, Sydney happens to be 161kms :)
So, we said we'd aim to do this ride in the middle of November, a month from now... What I didn't realise, is just what kind of hills lie between Newcastle and Sydney. I've only taken the train between here and Sydney and have no idea what the roads are like.
Then I started planning the trip and got a bit of a scare!!!

This picture shows the elavation (HILLS!) between Newcastle and Sydney and unfortunately it is much worse than anything I have ever taken on. IF I had any hills like this on the way to the Gold Coast, I would have walked up them. If I'm cycling with somebody else, I'll feel guilty about slowing them down and hope that I'll be able to cycle up most of the hills. Well, the highest points in this ride are 275m and it looks like I have to go up that twice, once starting just after the 72km mark and again starting just before the 108km mark.
The King Edward Park hill that I aim to build into my morning ride and which is basically the steepest hill that I've taken on is 100m high - these ones to Sydney are almost 3 times as high as King Edward Park!!! What have I gotten myself into???

Well, I did say that I'll train till early next month (3-4 weeks), have a test run up some hills around here and then decide whether I'm ready. I want to do it at some point, just not certain I'll be ready within a month.

So... On Tuesday morning I weighed 126.5kgs and today I weigh just below 124kgs. Obviously I can't keep up that speed of weight loss (not healthy or possible), but I will aim to lose another 6kgs before the trip, maybe even 8kgs. Weight makes a big difference on a bike, especially up hills so If I can weigh 8-10kgs less than usual, I should do much better up hills.
Then, starting tomorrow I'll build the King Edward Park hill into my morning ride. Probably aim for 3-4 days per week so that my legs get some time to recover as well.
There's another hill that I could build into my morning ride that a little higher than the King Edward Park hill at 125m and if I hope to do Sydney in a month from now, I better take that one on within the next 2 weeks also.

No idea how this will go... My aim for the rest of this year was just to get comfortable with the King Edward Park hill and I thought I'd think about that second hill towards next year... Now we're kinda fast tracking my hill climbing skills. Don't know what's possible, but it will certainly be great for my overall riding ability if I can improve my ability up hills.

I wrote a quick reply on your "trip to Sydney but did something wrong and it does not show. Go for it! But make sure that you are fit! Those hill cannot be easy!
Thanks again for the hard work traveling to the Gold Coast and the monies coming in! It is wonderful!!
I was telling that the electricity of the fourth house is being put in this week and the plumbing next week. The rest of the work is continuing as usual.

Hi Tia,

Glad to hear you're making progress there and yes, I am pleasantly surprised by the donations coming in!

I took on the King Edward Park hill this morning and was a little bit surprised. I struggled... I was out of breath and panting and whatever, but I actually got up the hill okay. Somehow it seems much smaller, less daunting than I remembered it. I now also understand why some of my colleagues frowned every time I spoke of the King Edward Park hill.
It is still a lot of work for me and I did take a short breather halfway up. I didn't stop cycling, but cycled into the entrance of the park just to take a couple of breaths on a flat stretch. But I now understand that conquering the King Edward Park hill isn't going to make me a master of the hills:)
so, I'll take a week or so to get used to this hill and then I'll try to work the next hill into my ride.
The sad part is that this hill makes my morning ride considerably more work, but it's exactly the same distance as before. So in my logs I still record only 23kms, but I'm working a lot harder to clock these 23 than when I cycle around the hill.

I last took on the King Edward Park hill some time before winter and I think I weighed around 5kgs lighter back then, so clearly I've gotten quite a bit more fit since then. Hopefully I can lose the weight quickly and then it'll just be even easier to get up there.

My poor bike is a different story. Poor baby needs a visit to the hospital quite desperately. Picked up some nasty sounds there and got a ... whatever, weird feeling in the crank - like my old school bicycles used to get just before the bearing gave in.

Cycled up King Edward Park hill again today and I think it was actually easier than yesterday. I was still terribly out of breath and whatever, but I did okay. This hill has 2 flat sections where you get to get your breath back while cycling towards the next uphill stretch. Not certain I would be able to make it without those flat sections, but we'll work on it.

I wanted to take my camera along this morning, but forgot. Would be nice to take a pic from the top of the hill on a weekend when I go past there a little later in the day. Also, I wasn't aware, but the Mattara Festival is on the go here in Newcastle from the 3rd until the 18th it seems. As I went past the waterfront a little later this morning, people were setting up stalls and all kinds of stuff along the river front. A couple of nice boats and babes and stuff that would have made for a good photograph here and there.

I thought last Sunday was too good to be true...

I cycled up the hill yesterday morning and realised that it's not as easy when you've had a bit of over-indulgence the previous night. I didn't make it all the way to the top. I stopped on the first flat section and it felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest! I think the last time I was that out of breath was in the navy during military service. WOW! It's going to take a while before I'm hill fit, but I must say it actually felt good on some level.

This is from the top of the hill. The point sticking out into the ocean is the Newcastle ocean baths. I come around that corner and then up to where I was standing when I toop the pic. Anyhow, this one's a big one for me.

I now wonder whether I stuggled because of the "over-indulgence" on Friday night or because I cycled a little faster than usual (before the hill). I read something on the Australian Cycling Forums yesterday morning where the guys were encouraging another cyclist to cycle faster instead of further. This fits in with my plans to learn to cycle faster, so I thought I'd give it a go yesterday morning. I cycled considerably faster than usual on the first section of the ride (about 8-9kms to the ocean baths and although I rested there before taking on the hill, I think that may have been why I didn't have strength left for the hill.
