Eric Olverson
Having retired from a lifelong farming career in Lancashire, I moved out to
Spain in 1997. After a major health set-back, super-fitness seems a
possibility once more. It will be needed for cycling in the 2010
‘Tour d’Afrique, in aid of the South African orphans of Thamsanqa, where I spent
2 months last year.
From now until next January, I will be focussed on getting kilometres under my
belt, swimming for strength, pilates and yoga for flexibility and core muscle build up.
Walking will be a useful cross trainer. During the summer, my brother Brian and
I will be walking in the High Pyrenees for a fortnight with Exodus.
After April, I hope to have a
mountain bike, one that I will use on the Tour. I need to get used to
rough terrain.
I need to be disciplined. Fortunately I have the full backing of my wife,
Carole, for which I am very grateful. It will be a lot easier with her total
support.
This is a very rewarding time in my life. I know first hand the great need there
is amongst the black townships of
South Africa and I also know first hand the magnificent results that can
be achieved with properly-channelled funding. I feel privileged to be in a
position to do something about it.
I hope you can follow me on this adventure; follow me on the training and
follow events in Thamsanqa. Any donations will go straight to where they
are needed and you will be able to read how the money is used. I am not
going to expect or ask anyone for money. You will know whether it is what
you can or wish to do.
